Gamification Author and Enthusiast

Gamification is the art of using game mechanics aka rules for learning purposes.

One of my main contributions to instructional design was writing Chapter 12  Gamifying Microlearning Elements for the book. Microlearning in the Digital Age.
The principles shared in the book are applied to the interactive eLearning samples shown here.

Gamified Quizzes

Engagement Strategy Beyond Conventional Multiple Choice Quizzes

You have probably taken boring, run-of-the-mill quizzes. What about if you had a competitive incentive to get great quiz results? This is why the Storyline Fighters concept was created. It’s hard to believe that this early prototype was developed almost 10 years ago with Storyline 2. If I’m not mistaken, I was the first eLearning designer to come up with such innovation.

Storyline Fighters 2

This sample was used for a course on conflict resolution as the final test for learners to prove their might and knowledge. Of course, the hidden purpose was to encourage them to quiz out if they knew their stuff and capture results in the LMS using SCORM 2004. The learner selects a point category, the higher the points, the more difficult the question. If the answer is correct, the blast attack affects the learner’s opponent and points are earned. The opposite happens when answers are incorrect.

Storyline 360 Fighters

Storyline 2 Fighters was a great success and this naturally led to an improved version as soon as Storyline 360 was released. This is a glimpse on the improvements made and the full interactive sample can’t be shared publicly. However, you can request to view it on a live web session if you so desired.

Improvements

This prototype is packed with improvements. First, the addition of a backstory where Jet (main character) gets notified that he’s past due on his compliance training. He’s only way out is to battle with his knowledge because being a sales executive, his time is too precious to sit for a 2-hour boring course. Second, a character selector functionality is applied with the use of various Storyline states and variables. Third, the blast attack fireball was improved with the use of a GIF. Lastly, results of each interaction were reported using Watershed LRS and xAPI standards.
