Maximize your LMS use with SCORM2004

That’s right! Are you taking advantage of the Shareable Content Object Reference Model or SCORM on your Learning Management System (LMS)?  SCORM is the protocol by which multimedia courses can report their results to the LMS.

Why is it important?

Courses that are developed in Captivate 7 or Articulate Storyline can be configured to be publish to your LMS with a SCORM manifest file.  If you are buying any LMS, you must ensure it can handle SCORM content which would give you the following data:

  • Number of slides visited by the learner
  • Buttons and areas clicked by the learner while viewing
  • Quiz and tests scores
  • Detailed score reporting down to the a multiple choice selection
  • Pass and failing grades

What’s your SCORM flavor?

Well, SCORM comes in two modalities:

  1. SCORM 1.2 (old version only capable of Pass\Fail grades)
  2. SCORM 2004 from 2nd to 4th edition (capable of detailed reporting for views and test scores)

So remember, if you are not using SCORM, then all you are measuring is a learner’s ability to seat in front of a computer or tablet and “get by”. You also have to factor in the cost of your LMS and the essential data you are missing by not enforcing SCORM reporting.
